Penrith Pumas Wheelchair Rugby has grown from a spark of lived experience into a transformative force for inclusion across Cumbria. Founded in 2020, the club was created to fill a glaring gap: the absence of accessible, meaningful sporting opportunities for disabled people and those with long‑term health conditions. Today, the Pumas stand proudly as the only wheelchair rugby club within 150 miles a beacon of possibility for individuals who have long been overlooked by mainstream sport.
What began as a small grassroots initiative has evolved into a thriving community built on empathy, determination, and the belief that everyone deserves a place to belong. Our players range from juniors to adults, from those living with visible impairments to those with hidden disabilities, all united by a shared desire to connect, grow, and challenge themselves. On court, the sport builds strength, skill, and strategy; off court, it builds friendships, confidence, and hope.
The Pumas have achieved remarkable milestones; from league promotion and national recognition to players representing Great Britain on the international stage. Yet our greatest achievement remains the everyday impact: reducing isolation, improving wellbeing, and creating a community where people feel seen, valued, and supported.
Penrith Pumas is more than a club. It is a movement for inclusion, a catalyst for personal transformation, and a testament to what can happen when a community chooses to believe in one another. Through sport, we are changing lives and through our values, we are shaping a more inclusive future for Cumbria.
2025 was a year that reminded us why Penrith Pumas exists: to create a space where people feel seen, valued, and empowered. Every achievement, from national titles to international debuts, from community workshops to award recognition was made possible by the passion and commitment of our players, volunteers, families, and partners.
Our transition to CIO status marks a new chapter in our journey. It strengthens our governance, expands our fundraising potential, and ensures that our mission is protected for years to come. But at the heart of everything remains the same belief: that inclusive sport changes lives.
I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together this year. The Pumas are more than a club we are a community built on resilience, kindness, and ambition. As we step into the Premiership and continue growing our impact across Cumbria, I am excited for the future we are building, one session, one partnership, and one person at a time.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
